Fall Colors Trip

2017 Trip

This year’s Fall Colors trip will be Friday September 22 through Sunday September 24 at Heart Lake at Adirondack Loj in the Adirondacks, near Lake Placid. It will be at Leantos 12 and 15 and the two campsites (26 and 27) located on the access road to the leanto.

If you have never come before, we hike on Saturday and Sunday. You provide your own breakfasts and lunches. Stoves are available for cooking breakfast. Saturday’s dinner is a “catered” gourmet meal of hot cider, hot soup, Waldorf salad, steak Teriyaki, wheat pilaf, mashed squash, and dessert. Bring your own beverage for the meal, and bring your own eating utensils, plate, cup, and bowl for the soup.

Some people who like to hike but do not camp have indicated an interest in coming but staying in a nearby motel. You can stay off site but need to make your own arrangments. To enjoy Saturday night's dinner, you will still need to bring plate, cup, and eating utensils.

Driving instructions:
Take Taconic Parkway North all the way to the end where you get on the
Berkshire extension of the New York Thruway West toward Albany. The
first exit is I-90 to Albany, take that exit. There are two choices at
this point:
1) take I-787 north to Troy and then Route 7 West to I-87 (the Northway).
2) continue on I-90 to I-87
Option 1 is slightly shorter. On the other hand there is a large
choice of fast food places on Wolf Rd. If you take I-90 to I-87 and get
off I-87 at the first exit, Route 5. At the end of exit ramp go straight across
Route 5 going north on Wolf Road. You can get back on the Northway by
continuing north on Wolf Rd.

In either case continue North on I-87 (The Northway) to Exit 30 which
is Route 73 and marked to Lake Placid, Keene and Keene Valley. Follow
signs to Lake Placid going through Keene Valley and Keene. After you
pass the Van Hoevenburg Bobrun area you will come to several Motels,
Cascade Inn, White Sled, etc. Shortly after this there are trees along
the road on the left and then a left turn on Adirondak Loj Rd. There
is an open field on the left at the turn. This is the only left turn
anywhere in the area. If you start seeing many buildings you have
gone too far toward Lake Placid, turn around and go back.

Go to the end of Adirondak Loj Rd which ends at the campers center.
